Scarlet bugler is a flowering perennial found throughout northern, central, and southern California, including the southwestern edge of the Mojave Desert, where it grows in dry washes and on rocky slopes.

Scarlet bugler has thick, opposite, grey-green leaves that are sometimes fused at the stem. Its flower stalks can reach up to 4 feet tall and bear numerous bright red, tubular flowers.
