Chaparral yucca is a perennial succulent common to coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and desert chaparral ecosystems where it is found in sandy washes and on rocky slopes. It produces a fountain-like cluster of rigid, pointed pointed, blue-green leaves and makes an excellent accent plant.

Plants bloom only when mature, at around 5-10 years of age, when they send up a tall flower stalk that grows quickly to 10-15 feet tall. The inflorescence bears hundreds of white to purple flowers that are pollinated by a yucca moth (Tegeticula maculata). Plants die after flowering but are often replaced by offsets at the base of the mother plant.
