$16.00

Sold in a 1 gallon container.

Mature size: 4-5 feet H x 3-5 feet W
Sun exposure: Full sun
Soil: Sandy or gravelly
Water use: Very low
Cold hardy to: 15 degrees F
Flowers: Pink-orange in spring and summer
Native to: California deserts, Nevada, Arizona and northern Mexico
Elevation: Up to 4,200 feet

Pencil cholla has several main branches that spread and ascend upwards. The stems almost look rope-like and can become grey or woody at the base with age. It has long spines sparsely distributed along stems and many tiny glochids. The small flowers range in color from orange to pink to red to brown and attract native pollinators.

It is found throughout the creosote bush scrub in washes, flats, bajadas, desert pavement and volcanic substrates. This is a great habitat plant as cactus wrens are often found making nests in the branches and it makes a good hiding spot for lizards.
