The leaves are highly fragrant. White sage occurs naturally in the coastal sage scrub plant community as well as in chaparral and yellow-pine forests. It is found in smaller numbers in both the Mojave and Colorado deserts. It is good for erosion control and will attract many birds, butterflies and bees. White sage populations in the wild are threatened by cultural appropriation and commercial harvesting.
