Fourwing saltbush is a densely branched shrub that is widely distributed throughout the western United States. It has gray-green leaves that can be white and scaly. It can be distinguished from other Atriplex species by the narrow linear leaf and large winged fruit. It is wind-pollinated and there are separate male and female plants. It is fast growing and can grow up to eight feet, but is typically within the four to six foot range. Saltbushes (Atriplex sp.) are adapted to soils with high salinity. This saltbush is very tolerant of clay, alkaline and saline soils and can be found on slopes, flats and open scrub habitat. It is an important habitat plant for birds and butterflies. In particular it is a host plant for the rare San Emigdio blue butterfly (Plebejus emigdionis).
