Formerly Prosopis pubescens. Screwbean is a fast-growing shrub or tree with delicate green leaflets and thorny branches. Plants drop their leaves in winter. The small flowers are arranged in spike like clusters and are followed by fruits that are distinctly coiled. It is generally found along creeks and in sandy or gravelly washes or ravines. It is not as common in the Mojave Desert as the honey mesquite in part because it prefers conditions with slightly more water. Screwbean mesquite attracts many different types of animals including insects, birds and mammals.
