Like most penstemons, it is very showy when in bloom and attracts many pollinators, including hummingbirds and sphinx moths. Desert penstemon occurs in both the Colorado and Mojave Deserts of California where it grows in gravelly washes and canyons in creosote scrub and pinyon-juniper woodland. It is drought, heat, and cold tolerant, and it is somewhat resistant to deer and rabbits once established. Penstemons are generally short-lived (3-4 years) but reseed readily.
