Bush seepweed is a perennial ever-green shrub with fleshy, succulent leaves that appear gray-green in color. Older growth often appears woody at the base. When under stressful conditions, the leaves can turn pink in color. Its flowers are discrete and clustered along the stem and surrounded by fleshy bracts. Being a halophyte species, it can excrete salt through its leaves allowing it to be found in a variety of saline and alkaline habitats such as salt marshes, desert flats, coastal wetlands, playas, and seeps.
