EPA rollback of greenhouse gas endangerment finding is unsound

Statement by Kelly Herbinson, Executive Director of the Mojave Desert Land Trust, in response to Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Lee Zeldin’s announcement that the agency is prepared to roll back the 2009 greenhouse gas endangerment finding. The finding, based on consensus science, determined that carbon dioxide and several other gases pose a threat to the public’s health and welfare.

“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s planned rollback of the landmark 2009 greenhouse gas endangerment finding is an irresponsible reversal of a bedrock policy that safeguards human health and protects our shared environment. This is an unsound and illogical act by the federal agency responsible for enhancing air and water quality and it puts profits over our health. The proposed rollback will decimate years of hard-fought improvements to air quality in California. It is a major obstacle to national, state and local efforts to address the irrefutable health impacts of climate change in our communities.”

The Mojave Desert Land Trust (MDLT) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to protect and care for lands with natural, scenic, and cultural value within the Colorado and Mojave Deserts. Since its founding in 2006, MDLT has conserved approximately 120,000 acres, conveying more tracts of land to the National Park Service than any other nonprofit. MDLT established a conservation seed bank to ensure the preservation of native species and operates an onsite nursery at its Joshua Tree headquarters which has grown over 100,000 native plants for restoration projects and community landscaping. MDLT educates and advocates for the conservation of the desert, involving hundreds of volunteers in our work. For more information, visit mdlt.org.
